Peruvian Emoliente: a healing drink that combines plants and herbs. If you need help with any discomfort, you can describe your symptoms to the vendor, who will prepare a special mixture for you.

Each bottle or jar contains a different herbal liquid, many of which come from the Amazon rainforest.

Emoliente is one of Peruvians' favorite drinks. Perfect for a cold winter day when sipped straight from the steaming pot, and also incredibly refreshing on a hot summer day once it has cooled in the refrigerator for a few hours.

A feast for the palate

Because of its flavor and potential health benefits of drinking emoliente, it’s worth having even if you're already in good shape.

At the very least, it will keep you warm during your nightly walks, especially in the Andes, where the temperature drops significantly after sunset.

Its avid drinkers believe it is a natural diuretic and also good for the liver and overall digestion.

How to prepare it

In general, every emoliente should contain: toasted barley, flaxseeds, dried horsetail, dried grass, and llantén (llantén leaf).

You can add as many ingredients as you like, including anise, boldo, lemon verbena, lemongrass, and cat’s claw (a woody vine native to South America, known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties).

Although it has many good properties, emoliente is a humble beverage. You can find it on many street corners in Lima, and it’s inexpensive, which increases its appeal for those wanting to try it.
